I am looking to take a job in harrisburg, PA. I am looking for a great area for my wife and i to start a family. we would prefer to live somewhere a little more rural or in a neighborhood. I would prefer to live out of city centers and I don't mind a commute of a max of 30min away. any ideas?

Anywhere on the west shore would be a good place to start...Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, New Cumberland, Dillsburg are all good areas to look at. If you want to stay on the east side...Hershey, Hummelstown, and Linglestown all fit the bill although some might stretch the 30 min commute time when you factor in traffic.

Carlisle is a pretty nice area. It has quick access to I-81 and is an easy drive to Mechanicsburg's shopping district (without the congestion of living in Mechanicsburg).

Given the significant traffic congestion in the area, it might take more than 30 min real time to get from one point with a Harrisburg postal address to another point with a Harrisburg postal address. Would be able to provide more particulars with an approximate work site address. Also with some idea of where you are coming from it might be easier to gauge concepts like "more rural" and "neighborhood" expectations, as those mean different things to different people.

True, depending on rush hour... pretty much any day can be hit or miss for a 30 minute commute. When I worked up near PHEAA and had to get down to Mulberry Station on 2nd street- if the congestion was heavy, then I could be looking at 25 minutes easily... then that dang policeman always stopping traffic on Front Street to let the workers out of the side street... I would be so soooo close to my turn...
never helps the flow on a main three lane street when you do that.
We moved up near Oberlin- figured out the shortcuts but still need to either get onto Front or go up Cameron to a side street or Paxton- and that's 25 minutes right there.
