Hi All,

I've seen articles lately about the current revitalization going on in the Midtown section of Harrisburg (things such as the Arts Center, Bookstore, Millworks, etc...). But I wanted to know, how safe is it to walk around and visit these attractions in Midtown? I've heard that the section can have bad crime, so I wanted to get some input as to if it's the kind of place where one would have to constantly worry about being mugged while being there. And out of curiosity how is Midtown in comparison to downtown Lancaster city with its ongoing revival? Looking at the map it looks like a lot of these Midtown attractions are between Forster Street and Harris Street, if that helps for reference. Thanks!

Midtown is no less safe than any other urban area. It looks a little more rough around the edges than Lancaster City, but it's no less safe. As with any urban area, always keep your eyes and ears open to your surroundings, but I don't think you need to worry about constantly being mugged. Those events are few and far between, and very rarely are they random muggings.

Midtown is perfectly fine!!! I think the media loves to blow out of proportion crime in the city, and it scares everyone away which is a shame. In almost any urban area, most crime that happens, is between inter - related people (meaning they have some sort of existing relationship or correspondence amongst one another). Random crime is not as common as you think.

DEFINITELY come to Harrisburg! They have :

Broad Street Market
The Millworks
Midtown Scholar
Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center
Midtown Cinema
Susquehanna Art Museum
Gamut Theater (tons of great live performances)!!

Oh and the city has bike share now! So its so easy to take a bike for an hour and ride along the beautiful riverfront!

Come to Harrisburg! Its a great city! And do not be afraid of some diversity. No one is going to hurt you, even if they are just hanging on the corner. People are just hanging out. Its urban life. Say hello, immerse yourself! Harrisburg is great.

Check out: 3rd in the Burg. Its the 3rd Friday of every month and there is always a ton of great things happening!

I also recommend checking out the Art Association of Harrisburg. Really great place. It is more downtown, but worth going too.

Also check out the publication: The Burg. It has all the weekly events. Harrisburg is the best kept secret in Central PA right now!
