Looking for nice areas within no more than a 30 minute commute of the Naval Activity Center in Mechanicsburg. I would like to stay as far in the Hershey direction as possible since that is the direction our family is in. I haven't heard good things about Harrisburg, so I'm not really looking at that as an option. 200,000 would be around the max we are looking to spend on a home. T

The commute from Hershey to Mechanicsburg (Naval Activity Center area) will be just around 30 minutes in no traffic. In traffic? Probably 45min-1hr. I think average house price in Hershey may be higher than what you are looking to spend ($250k or more), though may be able to find cheaper.

Hummelstown may be an option. It is close to Hershey, and housing is more affordable for your price range. Though your commute time would still be 30-45mins. Maybe also Middletown area.

More towards Harrisburg you would have options like Lower Paxton, Susquehanna Township. They will likely have Harrisburg addresses, but are not within the city limits. Moving to the other side of the river and closer to the naval base you would have Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, Enola type areas.

If you have kids, I'd go with Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin school district area - not as far as Hershey, but still a nice area and school district. If kids are not an issue, Middletown has some nice areas and the homes are cheaper - and as someone who is looking in Lower Dauphin right now, there is a wider selection in Middletown. Schools are not rated very well, though (not horrible or dangerous, just not great). Central Dauphin school district is closer to the west shore and rated better than Middletown if you have school-aged kids. But CD East is supposed to be pretty bad.

Honestly if you really want to stay within a 30 minute commute stay on the West Shore. There are many days when 30 minutes from my office in Hampden Twp only gets me onto the South Bridge.
