Relocating to Harrisburg and looking to find the best area that matches us to buy a home in. We are a newly married couple and have a couple of dogs. We'd be looking in the price range of $200-$300K, and would like something wtih a decent sized yard. The ideal area would have character, maybe near a lake or in a wooded area, and also have shopping and decent restaraunts close enough to get there easily.

The other factor is that I work out of a home office, so commuting is not an issue, so we hope to get just outside the city area where we can get more home for our $$$$$. Anywhere in Eastern PA is acceptable, but doing minor research online has proven the Harrisburg seems much more affordable than some of the other areas.

Any help in letting me know some suburbs or areas that we should narrow our search down to would be great. Thanks

Are school systems going to be an issue now or in the future? Lots of good communities within a 30 minute radius--you will not have trouble finding housing with fenced yard (even if you have to do have it done after move in) in your price range. Try Elizabethtown, Lititz, Manheim, Strinestown, Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, Mt. Joy, Donegal, West Shore, New Cumberland, Yocumtown etc. My advice would be to find a neighborhood with access to either Route 83, 322 or 283 so you can get to Harrisburg easily if/when necessary.

Possibly in the future, but more worried about getting in a nice area. We are able to be located anywhere in the Eastern half of PA. In doing more internet research, Allentown seems to be a popular place, any help in comparing allentown vs. harrisburg metro area?

They are both very similar except Allentown is larger and growing faster....getting overrun with a lot of people from New Jersey and housing is more expensive because of that. But, the area is closer to NYC and Philly if that is your thing.

Harrisburg is cheaper with slower, steadier growth. Not as much shopping/amenities as Allentown. Both areas have good schools in the suburbs.
