HIA was recently ranked the 7th cheapest airport in the country based on the average round trip ticket price. The average airfare in 2012 out of the modest sized airport located in Middletown was $291. Additionally LVIA, Philadelphia International Airport, and Pittsburgh International Airport were ranked the 12th, 47th, and 78th cheapest airports in the country respectively.

Not sure how trustworthy this study is though, as many people from central Pennsylvania continue to travel either to BWI/PHL for cheaper airfare and more importantly more nonstop destination options.

There must be a secret that I don't know about, because although I favor and prefer to fly in and out of Harrisburg, I really have to justify the expense vs. the time/aggravation to drive to the other two airports.

Hold on here. An airport like LAX offering alot of international flights in comparison to Long Beach isn't a fair study. As I understood the article someone just calculated all the airfares, and then averaged them out. So Long Beach, which doesn't offer many international destinations comes out looking cheaper. OK in the case of Long Beach, Jet Blue is a dominant carrier there, and they are a budget-minded airline. But you must compare LAX-JFK with LGB-JFK, and so on to find out if on the whole LAX is less or more expensive. There is no LGB-CDG flight, etc. which costs at least 1,000. Or those flights to Sydney, Wellington, Narita, and so on.

Last time I visited the area, I flew from Seattle to BWI. Going home, I flew Harrisburg to Seattle.

So in my experience, it's cheaper to fly FROM Harrisburg, but more expensive to fly TO Harrisburg.

I wonder why that would be? Is that the airlines' promotion to get passengers to fly into other airports? I remember years ago special promotional airfares to Albany, LVI, etc. that it was cheaper to fly into these airports than EWR, PHL etc.

Well, thinking about destination popularity, it makes sense. How many people want to fly to Harrisburg? Not many, really. It's not a major destination. That means to maintain a route with Harrisburg as a destination, seats will have to cost more.

But flying from Harrisburg to a major city? Very popular. Seats can be cheaper.

possibly flying TO harrisburg is business (higher fares) while from is leisure (lower fares)?

Just a thought, but could operational cost be a factor here? HIA does not provide airlines with services that other airports might for example fuel and baggage handling. Airlines at HIA either have their own employees take care of those responsibilities or have an outside contractor do the work for them. The latter would seem to save the airlines money by bidding those contracts out and getting the best price available. Of course there are landing fees, terminal leases, and the likes to consider when talking about operational cost. Overall this just speculation as I am not sure how expensive it is to operate out of HIA, but if operational cost at HIA are high the airlines would charge more to customers flying into HIA and less to people flying out of HIA for the same reasons pman and pahn stated.

Of course the study is flawed, but I think present lower fares at MDT might be because of Frontier. However, Frontier's Denver-westbound service from MDT isn't permanent. It's seasonal.

There is also discussion that Frontier might be sold and converting to a true ULCC, ultra low cost carrier. It likely won't commit to DEN and routes to mid-size markets from it, in a new Spirit style operating model.

It looks like Frontier will be sold to Bill Franke's investment firm Indigo Partners, which held a 16% share of Spirit.

Finally, a buyer for Frontier Airlines?

Frontier for the year has averaged a 93% load factor at HIA and last month posted a 97% load factor. Most airlines would not walk away from those numbers. Spirit does not fly to a large number of midsized markets like Allegiant does, but curiously it serves Latrobe and offers flights to Dallas among other destinations. So the new Frontier route map may or may not include Harrisburg in it. Many airlines have come and gone in the past decade (mainly due to mergers), but one thing is for sure, the new Frontier will offer lower fares, but outrageously high fees.
