My husband and I are going to be in the Harrisburg/Hershey area the first week of October. We plan to visit the Civil War museum, since we both enjoy American history. We really enjoy finding off the beaten path stuff, and as I already mentioned historic sites. We also like visiting locally owned shops and farmer's markets.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

If you enjoy history, Gettysburg battlefield is a must see. It's an incredible place. Otherwise there are many quaint small towns between Hershey and Mt. Gretna (worth a Saturday visit) along Rt 422 and other smaller roads that you can easily follow via GPS. There are lots of Amish, and roadside stands in October would be mostly pumpkins, gourds, apples and jams/jellies.

100% visit and take a tour of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building. It is considered one of the most ornate in the nation.

Also check out the Millworks. The Broad St. Market. Susquehanna Art Museum. Harrisburg Art Association. Midtown Scholar and rent a bike, to bike along Front St. and enjoy all the historic architecture and mansions with river views!!

Off the beaten path: Mt Gretna

For Farmer's Markets perhaps Lancaster or Ephrata.

As far as locally owned shops, if you have anyone to buy toys for, Toys on the Square in Hummelstown is a large single location store with much browsing potential.

To look around for trinkets and such, one place to do that is downtown Lititz, a cute shopping area not far north of Lancaster.

Many local stores and restaurants are closed Sundays and Mondays in this area.
