Hello there.

I am in my mid-twenties and I am looking to buy my first townhouse.

I currently work as a field technician for a large I.T. services firm in south-central Pennsylvania. I generally cover the Harrisburg, Lebanon, Carlisle, York, Gettysburg, Chambersburg, and McConnellsburg areas, but my parts-pickup location is the DHL station near Middletown, PA.

I would like to know where are the best locations for relatively cheap ($100-150K) townhomes around Middletown/Hummelstown/Hershey.

Even though I drive a Toyota Prius, it wouldn't be best for me to be more than 30 minutes from the DHL station. So, northern Dauphin County and southern Schuylkill County are out, unfortunately.

I'm also interested in living in a low-crime area.

It's going to be difficult finding much in that price range in the suburbs. You may want to look into Midtown Harrisburg. My friend just purchased a 3 bedroom 1,200 sq foot townhouse for $124,900. There's a lot in this neighborhood in your price range.

You can certainly find townhouses in the 150s in the Hummelstown and Middletown areas including some new construction. They are not exactly urban chic -- you can always change the interior to update things though. Depends on what you are looking for in terms of size, features, etc. Check online for agencies that let you reference the area MLS without registering or signing a guestbook.

I, too, am looking for a condo or smaller townhouse in that price range (my current townhouse is just way too big for one person) and have found many listings in the MLS to consider. Harrisburg city townhouses are priced right, but are inconvenient for my business. And I've read in this forum that they are not meant for (ahem) old people like me Funny that the rehab townhouse listings often mention 'empty nesters'...I guess they are thinking of Perry County where a gal is often a granny at 35?
