My family are going to be staying for about 3 nights in this area. We will be coming from Mishawaka, IN and want to visit the Lancaster area and also some historical sites, including Washington D.C.

My understanding is that it is about 9 hours from MIshawaka to Harrisburg and about 2 hours to D.C. from Harrisburg. Is this correct?

I know nothing about this area. Is this a safe place to take a family with young children, or would other towns be better. We are on a budget. Found a hotel on Jonestown Road in Harrisburg for a decent price. Is this a place we can enjoy with our kids and not have to feel like we have to "keep our guard up" the whole time?

Any recommendations or advice would really be appreciated! Thanks.

Sorry, couldn't find the "edit" button. Wanted to add that the hotel we are considering is the Country Inn & Suites NorthEast (8000 Jonestown Road). Is this a safe place to be?
Thanks.

Yes, it's a safe area and also your only minutes from Hershey Park. Lancaster is about 45 minutes to an hour away, depending on the route you travel. Stop by the town I live in, Strasburg, (Historic Strasburg, Pennsylvania - America's Favorite Train Stop!). It's loaded with shops, a railroad and plenty of Amish farms and local food in the restaurants. Enjoy the area and the food!!
