My family is planning on moving to the Hummelstown or Hershey area and we are having the hardest time finding a selection of houses on the market. We've gone to the basic sites: realtor.com, truvia.com, and Jack Gaughen realty and there doesn't seem to be too much on the market. Is this normal for that area of Pennsylvania? We want to be in either the Derry or Lower Dauphin school district because of their size and reputation. My inlaws live in Elizabethtown and we want to be close to them. I'm looking for other suggestions of areas around Elizabethtown that have very good schools and also decent homes for sale. We're looking for a 4-5 bedroom on at least .5 acres for around $400-$450k. We're not too worried about jobs for when we get there. I'm a teacher w/ multiple degrees and my wife is a CPA. We don't know too terribly much about the area so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The lot size is a little big for this area and also the number of bedrooms. I would suspect that in Derry Twp/Dauphin Cty you couldn't touch a property meeting those specs that's not a major fixer-upper for $400k and there would be relatively few of those on the market at a given time.

I would think it may be possible in East Hanover Twp/Dauphin Cty or Conewago Twp/Dauphin Cty both in Lower Dauphin SD to find a couple of properties that meet your specs but they might have Middletown, Elizabethtown, or Grantville postal addresses instead of Hummelstown or Hershey. (Names of municipalities can repeat in PA and there are other East Hanover, Derry, and Conewago townships which are different places.)

You might have better luck with those specs in Lebanon County (Palmyra or Northern Lebanon schools) or possibly Elizabethtown Area SD (NW Lancaster County)

Right, a half-acre lot does limit availability for Derry for 4+ br house under $450k.
