I second hotzcatz reply of boric acid mixed with whatever they are attracted to. It's safe and the entire nest and queen is wiped out. You can get boric acid at Long's.

Until this year we kept ants under control in our Kailua (Oahu) house with Combat ant traps.

Not this year. We gave up and called Terminix. $450 for a year's service.

We live on The Big Island and this is the first year we have been moved in on with very small red ants. They keep coming .I never saw such small red ones. We have 2 nosey dogs and would prefer as natural and safe way to "bite back". Does anyone have a solution to rid ourselves of these pesky, persistant pia's?!

Yes, fuzzy, the key is to kill the queen! I have dogs so boric acid might be the way to go. What do you mix it with?

The formula here in the SFBayArea is 50/50 boric acid and sugar, then add a little warm water to make it a watery paste. I just make enough to put it in a cap from those 16 oz. water bottles..enough to spill out a bit. Put it next to their trail and soon they will swarm over the spilled mix and then into the cap for more. In a few days they'll all be gone...never to come back. It has never failed. But these are sweet loving ants here...don't know about ants attracted to water. But worth a try since it does have water mixed in.
