Moving from on post to a storage facility. I'm looking for moving companies to move a 2 bd house and pack it. I would like to have prices on both, packing myself and them packing. And then also storage facilities. Any advice?

I can't address pricing, sorry, but did want to post a caution to you (if you aren't already aware): If you pack/wrap and box stuff yourself, the moving company can't put the contents on their "inventory list," (even though such lists often can be examples of "creative writing" -- read on) so they say they are not "responsible" (as if most movers are trustworthy/responsible workers anyway) for any items missing since they don't know what's in each box because THEY personally didn't handle/wrap/box the individual items themselves.

But if THEY do the handling/packing, they CAN list individual items on their inventory list...well, I mean the stuff they don't STEAL that is. As you MAY have experienced in the past -- and if not, this is a heads up for you (and other readers) now -- movers are notorious for stealing and of course, you don't notice it until much later when you get where you're going, so nothing is ever done about it. If it wasn't listed on the inventory list, then it didn't exist -- good luck proving it did and getting a claim for loss approved. Thieving moving men seems to be a persistent problem in the industry EVERYWHERE in the country (look a the guys they usually hire) so I'm not singling out Hawaii...so you should expect that if THEY do the packing, they WILL steal something (like jewelry, some knick-nack they like, liquor, etc.).

So IMO, it's much better that YOU do the packing (seal & tape the boxes well) and do your own inventory list for those -- at least pack all the valuables/important items (and liquor!) yourself -- and just have them deal with the furniture and your ALREADY PACKED BOXES only, not have access to your stuff inside the boxes. You could leave the large items (like furniture) for them to wrap and move, partly because they'd be difficult heavy items to move yourself but also, such large items would be hard to miss were they stolen, and hard to explain why they were not on the official inventory list.

IME, the less access you give the "professionals" to your stuff, the better.

Good luck...

P.S. Take PICTURES of EVERYTHING before the movers get there...they will help later if something ends up being "misplaced" -- OR it gets DAMAGED...so you can prove it was NOT "already like that" (honestly is something else usually lacking).

Words to the wise...

I wouldn't trust movers. Rent a U-Haul and call up a self-storage place.

There is no way that I could pack everything by myself. I need some kind of movers.

LOL I did say that. I could pack some of this house but I don't know about packing all of the house.

Then compromise: Only pack the stuff most likely to be stolen (you can even take the more valuable stuff over to the storage facility yourself, in your car)...hire the rest (most) of it out to a moving company.

Do a Google search for Hawaii-based (Oahu?) moving companies and since you're already living there, just call them up and ask for quotes. Then do a search for them (also online) to look for any complaints (or do a search FIRST, and only call the best companies). For example, use keywords like "Mayflower moving complaints" and see what comes up (yes, negative stuff DOES comes up on Mayflower but put in the name of your Hawaii-based companies...this is just an example search).

Don't forget to check the Hawaii BBB (Better Business Bureau -- if there is one) on them also. Avoid those with too many and/or unresolved customer complaints and/or low BBB score, if at all possible. Hopefully, the best-rated companies will have good rates, too!

IME, trustworthy, reliable and honest moving companies are only a bit more common than unicorns are...but at least do SOME research BEFORE you part with your money.

Good luck...
