To relocate as a doctor to the Big Island, getting a vacation rental for a month or two might be a good idea. It would be best to find out which hospital you want to work at before getting a house nearby.
The hospital in Waimea is a nice one and Waimea (aka "Kamuela") is a nice comfortable town. You can drop down to the beach within a half hour's drive away or stay up in the cool cowboy country of Waimea. There is also a hospital in Honoka'a. It's a little warmer than Waimea, a nice charming country town about twenty minutes on the Hilo side of Waimea. Hilo has a hospital and it is a comfortable town, too. Rains a bit, (average rainfall is about 150" - 200" a year or somewhere around there) but generally the sun comes out afterwards, it's not like it takes a week to rain 6" it can do that in an hour. Kona has a hospital if one prefers the dry side as well as Kealakekua, doesn't it? Oh, there's a hospital in Pahala, too, if you want rural.
