I was wondering if Maui or Oahu would be a better place to live. I have only traveled to Maui in the Lahaina area and stayed for a month and really liked it. I am curious as to how Oahu would compare to Maui from a general view. I have also heard that people in Hawaii are very racist. I did not notice any when I went there so I was wondering how much truth there is to that. Also if anyone has any pictures to post of either Oahu or Maui they are always appreciated. Thanks

Oahu has areas like Lahaina, but also has a bigger city..and more to do.

I have gone to Hawaii for the past 6 years and never had any racism issues. I'm a caucasian, no doubt about it. As other threads have stated, it's all about how you treat others. Granted there is always someone who is unhappy and angry, but that's not isolated to race.

The picture thread has a ton of great pics from both.

My personal feeling is that both islands are incredibly beautiful for the 'general view'. However, Maui has those two high mountains that look across as they do, which is very unique.

Oahu grown... Specifically Kapolei and Nanakuli side.

Dthraco is right, it depends on how you treat people. I never had any issues with tourists unless I went into Waikiki - everyone seems to be drunk and acts very ignorant.

Don't try to be one of the locals. Make your way and you'll fit it. Soon you'll be speaking pigeon too!

Maui is nice but I love Oahu because it's a variety of everything basically. I always tell people that it's sometimes easier to start on Oahu than transition to other islands but that's my opinion.

If you need more in depth information on Oahu just let me know.

Good luck!

Don't worry about learning pidgin. You'll pick it up as you go.

Besides, there's nothing worse than a goofy haole spouting lame pidgin to the locals. Myself excluded, of course, because I am so charming about it.

I would suggest that you move to Maui since that is were you have been and know you like. I live in Lahaina and have lived in Aiea on Oahu. I personally prefer Maui to live. Oahu does have more to offer as far as places (stores, etc...) I have seen racism on both islands. I am white and have lived here most my life, grew up here and have always seen racism. I am not saying everyone is racist out here in Hawaii, but it does exist. We are all the same, no matter how long we were cooked :O)
