I am tired of these people talking crap about getting island fever and are moving back to the mainland for that reason..... WAKE UP! I have lived in michigan all my life and people in other states feel just as stuck in their state as they would if they were on an island.
Many people I know and co-workers are too busy raising families, working, and etc to have the TIME and the MONEY to go cross country. And on the mainland those are the main important things on the mainland. Time and money, and people on the mainland get very pissed if you waste either of those things.
I have been around a lot of people in michigan and only the wealthy and the well to do get to go anywhere out of state that is worthwhile. Before myself and my wife moved to oahu we traveled quite a bit.
I have been to the bahamas, aruba, new orleans, chicago, to name a few places and I am not bragging about this, I work hard and feel blessed to have done this because many people don't.
So to all those people who have lived on the mainland and thinking of moving back to the rush rush go go of the mainland ask yourself this question....
How many roundtrips did you take in a year out of state (I am asking the middleclass like me) that was fun and worthwhile and not for a funeral or business.....
You may be surprised at the answer.... Especially with gas being as high as it is these days. Everyone I know in michigan are having picnics and staying home for vacation.... And I am not even going to comment on WINTER months...... Talking about island fever.......... ........
Try CABIN fever!!!
If you are leaving Hawai'i, then it should be to europe, the asian countries or my personal favorite Australia not back to the mainland. Go someplace just as wonderful as Hawai'i and not backwards to the land where there are more jerks than good people.............

I live in Hawaii and I can't afford to go on vacation anywhere. If I lived on the mainland I could drive for a few hours. Big difference.

As a person from Michigan, I share your same sentiment. It feels just as isolated there.

I personally think people who talk about Island Fever probably come from California or the Northeast, where there really is a lot of various places you can drive to.

Really depends on a person's frame of reference.

to winkosmosis

where would you go? Then the cost of a hotel, eats, etc, most can't afford it. Or do you drive and look at the sights only?

I live in California and I don't want to drive more than an hour or two from home. I hate driving. It is boring and dangerous. If I am not close to home, it is either too hot or very rural. I am not wealthy but I would rather fly than drive if I have a destination that I need to go to that is more than a couple of hours from home.

I understand how you feel.. I live in Oregon on the Mainland (as you call it ), and I got Mainland Fever. I feel so stuck in this state. I have been stuck in the Portland metro area for the last 8 years or so and I want to get the heck out of here.. Planning on going to Idaho, but Hawaii always sounds nice.. Unfortunately, I am a shooting hobbyist and I don't think there is much you can do in Hawaii or if my guns are legal there. Cost is another big reason I don't move to Hawaii. I hear to get a studio on Oahu alone cost more than $1200 a month or so. Maybe, if I get wealthy one day I will feel obliged to get property there. Nonetheless, I really hope to visit one day and get to enjoy the beauty of the beaches, flora and mountains of Hawaii.. I'm not sure if being a "Haole" will pose a lot of problems if I was to try to make friends with natives, but I'd be interested to experience some Polynesian culture, as well.

Been watching the Lost series on Netflix. I am just so amazed at the beauty of Hawaii. I really think few places on the earth can rival its beauty.

Mystical Dream just addressing your shooting hobby question. You will see a difference in firearm laws between here and the PW North West but just about everything is legal to own including AR-15, AK-47, even .50 cal if you like. Only thing you can not have here is silencers, full auto weapons, and pistol magazines are restricted to ten rounds. There are some good public and private shooting ranges. There is mandatory registration and concealed carry permit is very hard to obtain but I doubt you will feel threatened enough here to feel the need for it. Hunting opportunities include wild pig, goat, mouflon sheep, axis deer, and game birds. Try to get over the "Haole" thing. Respect and be respected and you will be fine for the most part. Aloha

Somehow I am reminded of the old Jimmy Soul song: "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife ..."
(that is: unless you've got the money to keep her in the style she desires ... tempting though, ain't it? )
Aloha
