The only "good price" in Hawaii is in lower Puna or Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in South Kona. Every place else is expensive. Puna and HOVE have minimal infrastructure, large lots, sometimes sketchy neighbors.
If I could afford to live anywhere in Hawaii, it would be upper Kula on Maui. Cooler climate, pick your rainfall from somewhat wet to somewhat dry, views to die for, delicious air scented with eucalyptus and anise. I had a place there for a few months in the seventies, and loved the climate and view. Water was an issue, however and it could only be worse with more people. Sometimes the tap would just run dry. There never was more than a weak stream of water, and it was green and smelled of eucalyptus.
Kula is not what you picture in your mind when you think of Hawaii. Days are in the mid seventies, nights are down into the 40s, there's a frost every few years. Depending on how high you are, and how far north or south.
