"Kekoa" ("the warrior") is a more popular Hawaiian name (or "inoa") than "Koa" (bold, brave, fearless, etc). "Koa" is more of a nickname or something that we'd name a pet. Here's a list of the most popular inoa in Hawai'i for 2010 according to the Social Security Administration...
Social Security Online -- Popular Baby Names

Males
1. Kai
2. Kaimana
3. Nainoa
4. Kanoa
5. Keanu
6. Kekoa

Females
1. Malia
2. Kiana
3. Kaia
4. Leilani
5. Anela
6. Maile

Yup, I know a couple of "Kekoa"s, some "Malia"s (which has been a popular name for decades), couple of "Leilani"s although most of the "Anela"s I meet are pets.

"Koa" as a pet. That's interesting to know.

But, a person named "Kekoa", would be nicknamed "Koa" for short? Or no?

It depends. Most Hawaiians would probably name their keiki (child) something like "Kekoana'auaomaikamokuokeawe" ("the wise warrior from the Island of Keawe"), instead of something pedestrian like "Kekoa." Thus, "Kekoa" or simply "Koa" might be used as nicknames. Many non-Hawaiians, on the other hand, are content to simply name their keiki "Kekoa." Thus, in that situation, "Koa" might be used as a nickname. However, some folks are prone to shorten "Kekoa" and "Koa" even further and simply use an initial (eg. "K") as a nickname.

Yet, all nicknames aren't derived from given names or surnames. Some nicknames might reflect a person's physical characteristics (eg. "Tiny", "Slim", "Fats", "Beanpole", etc.), other characteristics (eg. "Speedy", "Boom Boom", "Four Eyes", "Squeaky", "Braniac", etc.), places ("Hollywood", "Vegas", "Manila", etc.), and so on. Occasionally, the nickname can even end up being longer than the given name (eg. "Tiny Kekoa", "Boom Boom Koa", "Wai'anae Koa", etc.).

I used to have a dog named "Hōkū" ("star"). Here are a few links to lists of some common Hawaiian names for pets...

Default My cousin's name is Kekoa

I have a cousin named Kekoa, but the whole family calls him Koa, because that's what his mother calls him.

How would "Koana" sound for a girl's name?

Is there any similar meanings in Hawaii, that might make that a negative sounding name?

I named my daughter Malana. Meaning "light' or "Buoyant light." It can also be a male name but I don't think that sound right.
