Hi there.

A family that we're good friends with recently moved to Hawaii, and they love it. We're considering moving there as well, but we have a few questions.

We're considering living on the Big Island. How does the Big Island compare to the other islands (primarily Oahu) as far as things to do for children, better schools, more residential and less touristy, etc.

We're also wanting to know about schools. What are some good public school areas on the Big Island? That will greatly help with our home search. (We'd need elementary school and middle school recommendations).

I've heard that the VOG is bad on the Big Island. How does that compare to Oahu? Also, is the VOG a year-round thing, or just in some seasons? How bad is it truly? (Specifically for people with asthma)

Also, can anyone recommend any good moving companies or car transportation services in case we decide to go through with this?

Thanks so much!

The Big Island is REALLY rural! Not sure what you are used to, but if you have teens, I would suggest coming for a visit and taking a look at either Oahu or Maui. I love to go to the Big Island to see what's new with the Volcanoes, but I'm old and boring!!!

Pauuilo school is good, but Pauuilo is a very small rural village. If you need employment to live here, jobs in the area are not likely. If there are any, it wouldn't provide enough for a transplanted family.

Vog goes where ever Pele wants to put it and if you have asthma it could be life threatening. Having a supply of oxygen would be a good thing. Sometimes at night, when the tradewinds don't blow, the vog will come in and it gets really hard to breathe even for folks without asthma.

Why don't you move near where your friends are? It is much easier moving if you have a support system in place.

Do you need employment to move? At the moment, with tourism down, there isn't much hiring going on anywhere, so if you need employment, then that should be a factor to consider, too.
