Think about it: do you pay to drive on the roads? No, well then the general tax base (you know, all those federal monies the states are fighting for) is paying to keep the roads and bridges usable. Because the states and counties sure can't pay with their minimal registrations and gas tax. In the social democracy countries of Europe, car registration is in the thousand range, gas is $3-4 per liter (hint, that's about one fourth of a gallon), AND there are tolls on most of the highways.

More scare-mongering (what are the terrorists next?). Boo-hoo, I can pay for a 50K vehicle, but I can't pay to insure it. If you have a 50K vehicle, you get what you deserve. I actually have a 3.7K vehicle (and I'm counting 1K it took to ship it from the mainland), so I think I'm fine.
There are thousands of miles of private roads on The Big Island, maintained by subdivisions who collect their own fees from the property owners. These roads are driven on by the general public, but the subdivisions do not receive any of the money from the gas taxes.

Europe's taxation woes are completely different than Hawaii. If you like Europe's taxes (socialism) so much, why don't you move there?

OMG, the HOA's are taxing us to death! The fees are going up every year too! Why don't you complain about that all the time?

The "why don't you move there" line is so childish. Plus, I don't get it: you're the one complaining about taxes in HI, and I'm the one that should move away?
