We are planning to move to Kauai in the next year and are currently researching a number of issues. We have found this forum very helpful.
I have some medical issues and would any experiences/opinions on the quality of medical care (particularly cardiologists and pulmonologists) on Kauai.
Also, for anyone with experience with COPD, how does the weather affect the condition?
Mahalo!

If you have heart and lung issues you really need to think if the outer islands are a wise choice. You can get stablized on the outer islands but if you have any major issues you'll need to be flown to Oahu - and that takes time.

A few years ago I was on a flight from Oahu to Kauai and my seat mate was traveling to Oahu about every week for medical tests, etc. She told me there wasn't much of any type of medical care on Kauai beyond basic emergency. Or, you might end up with "partial care'. Be careful, you might find certain specialists on kauai, such as cardiology, etc, but they can only do so much from their base of operation. Ask detailed questions, such as do you do tests, etc in house, or must I travel to Oahu for stress tests, etc?

You will hear people raving about the excellent care they received when they went to Wilcox for jellyfish stings, urchin spine injuries, etc.
Yes, fine for the basic stuff.
But if you have cardiac or pulmonary issues that will most likely worsen over time...NO.
When you go to the Wilcox site you will see quite a few cardiologists and pulmonologists listed in their MD list.
But these are physicians who are in the Hawaii Pacific Health system which encompasses not only Wilcox but three hospitals on Oahu. A bit misleading, IMHO.
And bear in mind that even those three hospitals on Oahu do not provide many treatments that one other hospital on Oahu can provide.
So if the kim chee hits the fan you will be airlifted to Queens.
Oahu is a lovely island.
Advice? If you really want to relocate to Hawaii, seriously think about coming to Oahu.
