You know, I can understand no sub-forums for Molokai, Lanai, and Ni-ihau ... but leaving Kao'olawe barren is a travesty.

Just sayin'.

I suggest you "bombard" the mods to have Kao'olawe added.

You were supposed to post this last Sunday. That's when April Fools Day was.

FYI Kaho'olawe used to be a fresh water. the US military exploded a 500 megaton bomb which in-turn broke the cap rock therefore contaminating the fresh water with salt water.

Kaho'olawe is one of those subjects that no one would make fun of if they had the slightest insight as to it's history or the myriad of problems that it has faced over the years. From it's location, being in the 'rain shadow' of Maui, to it's being used as a prison island, then having goats introduced, followed by a semi successful cattle ranching operation, and culminating in its being used as a military training ground and bombing target following the onset of World War Two, it's really never seemed to catch a break. If an Island could cry, Kaho'olawe would have run out of tears a long time ago. I'd look into the history of the place before I started joking about it.

I was a part of that sordid history. In fact, now I am on the verge of tears -- see what you made me do?!

Okay, all better now. Sometimes it's best just to let it out.

Interesting video! l learned that each of the three "Sailor Hat" tests consisted of a dome stacked 500-ton charge of TNT high explosive detonated on the shore of Kahoʻolawe. (For comparison, I looked up that the TNT equivalent in the Oklahoma City bombing was 4, 000 pounds [two tons].)
