My Mother and I are going to Hawaii for a vacation in 2008 and I want to go to Maui but she wants to go to Oahu? Which one do you think would make a better vacation? Also, I want to stay at a resort and she doesn't. Has anybody ever stayed at a resort before and how did you like it?

Both places can be great destinations for your visit...is there any reason your mom is leaning toward Oahu?

IMO, you can see more in less time on Oahu, but Maui has some great long day trips that take you to some amazing places.

As for resorts....again, you can do well either way. I'd say a lot of my decision would be based on how you plan to spend your time. If you will be doing a lot of tours or driving, why pay the extra for a reservation in a place where you will likely only be sleeping?

Tell us more about how you want to spend your time and maybe we can offer better ideas?

Oahu:
Cons
-Waikiki is crowded and extremely pricey
-Waikiki beaches and water smell of coconut suntan oil and burned flesh.
-Traffic is horrendous
Pros
-Great places to eat. From local cheap eats to fine dining
-Location of interests, hiking Diamond Head & Arizona Memorial, North Shore

Maui:
Cons
-Not many good food places
-Not as many popular places of interests as Oahu
-Traffic is horrendous at certain places
Pros
-Sunrise at Haleakaka
-Less busy, laid back atmosphere
-Resorts scattered throughout the coasts of the island
