Hello all,

I'm from Oakland/Berkeley area of the SF bay, and I'm going to be moving to Oahu later this month, or possibly early August. I'm 26 and going to be attending UHWO for about two years to finish my BA. I'm haole, but my stepfather and stepsister who I've grown up with since I was 2 are Hawaiian. Although I have of course been to Hawaii, I've never been to Oahu, and my family generally spends time on the big island.

I'm looking for some advice in terms of neighborhoods. I have searched around forums a lot, but most of what I'm finding is from years ago, and I'm under the impression that there have been some changes, particularly on the westside, in the last few years.

My initial feeling is that I'd like to live close to the beach, preferably within walking distance. I've considered Waikiki, but I'm not sure I'd be happy/comfortable with being in such a touristy area. For those who've spent time in Southern California, I have lived in Santa Monica, which gets packed with tourists on occasion, and I never really liked that aspect of living in the area. I'm not too concerned about commutes, and I'd be willing to live anywhere on the island. I'd like to live in an area with a decent surfing community and hopefully a good amount 20 and 30 somethings. Rent wise, I'm hoping for something relatively nice and clean in the range of $1500, give or take.

I'm somewhat concerned about living in an area where I'd be viewed as a total outsider. I often hear bad things about the westside, but I'm currently living in downtown Oakland, CA, so I'm not so sure how bad the crime would seem to me.

Any ideas would be super helpful and appreciated. I'm sure similar things are asked here often, so I apologize if this is totally redundant (I tried to search, I promise!).

Waikiki would be tough because of the drive to UHWO in Kapolei. Even though the actual distance isn't that far, it's the time it takes to get there that is the bear.

I can't give any good info on living on the Westside, as I only work with a couple folks who live there (and love it). But I will say that I have not had any problems on the west side when I go surf there. The first time I went my car battery died, and the first guy that stopped gave me a ride to Longs to get jumper cables. Humility and honesty go a long way. When it comes up and you tell people your dad and sister are Hawaiian and from Big Island, you'll probably be invited to a bar-b-que on the spot.

Surfing...go to a break long enough and you'll start to know the regulars. The rules of etiquette have several enforcers here, so as long as you know the rules, you should be fine. Most guys are pretty chill and don't mind some conversation when it happens naturally.

When start reading back on the forum you will see a recurring theme....rent a vacation VRBO type place for a month or two till you figure out where you want to live. This eliminates the tension of finding a place from the mainland and helps prevent getting scammed too. I would think the University would have some resources you can use as well.

Best of luck.
