When Larry Ellison bought 98+% of Lanai Island, the package included the golf courses and land and the two biggest hotels. But it didn't include Hotel Lanaii in Lanai City, the smallest hotel, a modest but charming 10 room hotel built for Dole executives in 1923, which until now was privately owned and operated.

Per the announcement, Larry now owns them all...

Well we can thank god that Mr Ellison owns the monopoly, at least he is socially responsible vs someone else who wouldn't be. Can you imagine some of the people on here where to own the island etc? Imagine the great depression with a soup line and rock hard bread for a days work because they haven't earned better.

Here's an interesting note... there is so much construction work going on at Ellison's Four Seasons Hotel on Lanai right now that it boosted Young Brother's shipping volume to and from the island by more than 60% last quarter.

Anyone heard any sort of "vision statements" or anything about how he wants Lanai to be like in the future? High end hotels are nice, but you need employees to work there and you'd hope he'd take care of everyone on the island, not just the tourists.

His company, Pulama Lanai, has a mission statement on their web site. Here's a snip:

Inspired by a deep respect for the people, history, beauty and natural resources of Lāna‘i, our vision is to develop our island into a thriving model of sustainability.

I always stay at Hotel Lāna‘i whenever I'm visiting Lāna‘i. I hope he doesn't change much, I like it exactly the way it is.

As far as i know, so far Ellison's has been an example of what the super rich should act like, concern for the people, aina and culture. Of course i don't have an ear in Lana'i so i could be wrong. Does anyone really know what is going on?

WHAT???

You aren't upset he makes way more than 300x the average worker. Hmmm.

Seems to contradict the other thread.

After almost two years you still don't get it, it has nothing to do with how much money you make or in another situation, what color of skin you have but what you do with your money, how you treat others and attitude. Now sure you can make it about being anti rich or racism to ignore or distract from the issues.

Im anti walmart for example not because the walton family is worth 110+billion but because they cut wages and benefits to there employees so they have to get government assistance to live because walmart wants to make max profits. While paying there CEO double million figure saleries. Now if the walton family was worth 110+ billion but paid there employees well we wouldn't have an issue period. Get it? This isn't supply and demand its greed.

I can't say that I know what's "really going on" but I do spend time on the island. The locals I've talked to have a preference for Ellison over the previous owner. He's made some small improvements for the local community that they appreciate.

There's a lot of construction happening now and rents have soared due to demand to house the workers, leaving the locals unable to afford their rent.

That's all I have heard.
