Sun is not quite as direct at noon now that it's passed to the south (opposite side of the equator). Do people who don't protect themselves from the sun this time of year...october ....still subject to ruined Hawaii trips?

Is it reasonable to assume the mid-day sun is still very dangerous without shade and SPF?

We just had a thread about this... somebody who was planning an October trip as I recall. Maybe a Search will turn it up.

In any case, you can get a bad sunburn in Hawai'i all year around, due to the high sun angles, the reflections off of sand and water, and the thinner ozone protection layer overhead in the tropics.

Good coral-safe sunblock, liberally applied and refreshed throughout the day, big brimmed hat, and long sleeves and pants after a few hours of exposure until you are well acclimated is the right way to approach the Hawai'i sun all year around.

Ah yes, here's that previous thread, with nearly an identical title, by another guy... also named Eric?

Hey, are you two related?

When I first moved here it as the last day of January. I was outside from 4 till dark with no sunscreen and got a suburn. So yeah, any time of year you can get burnt.

Pretty frequent to see tourists in Waikiki with REALLY bad sun burns. I used to snicker, but now I just feel bad that their trip has to include recovering from a sun burn. Not fun.

Not to mention how many poor people have to goto the emergency room because they spent a day playing in the surf and got severely burned.

I was born there and i burned really bad twice as a child and peeled alot and Im hapa. After that i would just get darker and darker. But yes you have to accumulate your body and skin.

Translating that to English, he meant you have to acclimate your body and skin.
