"The island of Lanai's only movie theater has reopened after being closed since the 1990s. The Maui News reports that the theater now known as Hale Keaka underwent a $4 million renovation.
The landmark was originally commissioned by James Dole in 1926 to provide family-friendly entertainment."
Good to see your doing local community culture stuff whtviper, keep it up.
I think its awsome that they are remodelling the theater. Hawai'i had such a rich history with theaters. I hope someday they restore the Queen in Kaimuki too.
Anyway don't want to hijack your thread, if your interested in Hawai'i's rich history with theaters DM me, i have some great material.
Too bad they didn't put pictures in the newspaper article, but good for Lanai. Having a theater is always a good gathering spot for folks and helps keep the town's identity. The theater in our little town was just saved from extinction by a crowd sourcing event to get enough funds to get a new digital movie projector. I don't know if that would have worked on Lanai, especially since the movie theater had been closed for so long.
There's something about theaters which are a good social cement. Everyone can go get the video and watch the movie at home if they want, but going to see it in a big communal group has a whole different vibe to it.
It looks as if being bought by Larry Ellison is a really good thing for Lanai, but I'm not close enough to the inside to know for certain. It looks very beneficial from the next couple of islands over, though.
