The individual stories Civil Beat will certainly give a preconceived impression: That life in Hawaii is difficult to support economically. Yeah, we know that.

How about you find some stories of folks who make a living here? Can support a family of 3 or 4, two cars and afford a house in a decent neighborhood. Run the numbers of what it takes in terms of professional skills and education. Who cares if the folks being presented are anonymous as long as it is researched well.

Yes, the Civil Beat should find some folks who are living well--people in the military, engineers, programmers, luxury hoteliers. They exist. However, it's pretty obvious that the people who are living simple, easy lives on all Hawaiian islands, not just Oahu, are anomalies. Land and property are immensely expensive. Private schools, a necessity for most families, are expensive. HOAs and utilities are expensive. The highest paid workers can obviously support families, own a home, and pay for education comfortably--but that's not the norm. At any rate, this is "old news." Anyone who doesn't know that it's tough to afford to live in Hawaii must have lived his life with a bag over his head.
