Q: Who buys a 12k car?
A: Smart people; smart pepole don't spend a ton of money on a rapidly depreciating item.

You're talking about a used car, aren't you? A $12,000 new car is still rapidly depreciating, only it has roll up/down windows, no power locks, and a manual transmission. That's not smart people buying them. It's poor people.

And how does all this relate to the original question posed by ystasino?

Dreaming, we get it you're poor and you can't roll your back windows down while driving. Some of us are enjoying the discussion.

Not really, a 12k new car losing half its' value is still a smarter use of $ than buying a 40k car that loses half its' value.
Yes, buying a used car minimizes the hit, but when it comes to new cars, the gteater the purchase price, the more you will eat in depreciation (ever checked resale value on a 5 year old BMW? It's pathetic).
And maybe I was able to retire at 47 in Hawaii with no debt, a paid for house and numerous other assets because my (not poor) parents taught me not to waste money on poor investments such as new cars. I have quite a few wealthy friends that strictly buy used.

I've done it before. As an already Hawaii resident, you will have to pay GET tax along with the shipping cost. That's the main drawback.

I don't know if lack of sales tax + mainland competition (pushes prices below msrp) + lack of destination charge would offset shipping costs & GET cost for buying out of state on a new car.

For more rare, uncommon, or some pricier cars, it does make sense to buy from mainland, as the market is really small in Hawaii. So the car you want is either unavailable or marked up to a ridiculous price to reflect that scarcity.

Another anecdotal, my brother lived on the mainland, bought a Tacoma, shipped it back to Hawaii when he moved home (didn't pay GET). Drove the Tacoma around in hawaii for a few years, and ended up selling it for around the same price he bought it at on the mainland. Hawaii's markups on tacomas are ridiculous.

Are you sure about that? If you ever shipped a car before, there's a cost to truck a vehicle to California, then another cost to load it on a boat to send it from Hawaii. If a dealer is 2 blocks from the auto plant, they can just drive the car to the dealer lot.

The destination charge on vehicles is the same in all 50. People of Ohio (and California for imports) subsidize those of us in Hawaii. Thanks, Mainlanders!

If that's the case, then you're probably right!

Loving, we get it too. You're rude. One thing visitors enjoy about Maui is the Aloha Spirit. Most people pick it up naturally. Since you obviously haven't, perhaps you aren't a good fit?
