For all you old fogies who move to Hawaii....

Be careful what nursing home you move into.....

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/0...facilities-us/

According to the report, one Hawaii facility “failed to correct an insect infestation such that there were cockroaches and ants near residents, on countertops and crawling on medical charts.” Yuck....

Yeah, well, considering this is Hawaii, there's more insects here than on the mainland. Since a lot of Hawaii buildings are open to the outside, entirely keeping insects out is almost impossible. It's easier in some areas than others, but for the Hilo facility, it would probably be impossible to keep all insects out. At least, not without some pretty toxic and draconian methods, IMHO. Does the report mention if it's one cockroach/ant or a whole bunch of them? One bug shouldn't be a problem, but, it's also entirely possible that they do have an insect problem. Although, unless we can see their data, we don't know if it was one bug or a hundred.

I've had a couple people interested in building senior care facilities. If there's less than - I think it was - six elder residents, then they aren't required to have medical staff on site. They've been considering building a two story home with four or five bedroom suites on the lower floor along with a common room. Lots of lanais and some gardens. The caretaker family lives upstairs and takes care of the elder folks downstairs. That provides them with a job and a house all at the same time.

If I had to put a parent or myself in a nursing home, I certainly have a minimum expectation cockroaches aren't crawling on countertops and and medical charts.
