At the stores here on the BI, Loves bread cost nearly twice as much as the other brands. I didn't see a lot of in people's carts. The article mentioned that the store sales went up and the institutional sales went down. Just speculating here, but maybe the restaurants etc could afford to pay more for their bread than consumers could.

In addition to the laid off employees mentioned in the article, it's also going to affect people who were employed by other companies distributing their product throughout the islands.

Saw an interesting story this morning on when the State of Hawaii didn't come to terms with a lease with Oahu's only flour mill - it probably contributed highly to the demise of Love's - without the mill, Love's had to use much more costly smaller bagged flour. The mill was eventually demolished a couple of years ago. While the mill was antiquated - the State made no provision for a replacement.
