Hawaii gets millions of free dollars per year (tourist money).

I cannot for the life of me understand when a politician is driving around the island and seeing the piles of trash everywhere, especially on the side of the roads/highways, or even the beaches, why they don't get embarrassed and say to themselves "we should clean this up."

Third world cities have beach clean ups literally once every single morning.

Tourists (and others) trash the island and there are garbage around that is probably been siting on the side of the road for YEARS. This is so sad and pathetic. Absolutely unacceptable. Why don't politicians allocate a large portion of tax revenue for clean ups and infrastructure? The cleaner a place is and the better infrastructure it has, the more people it'll attract, resulting in even more tax revenue.

I see people and groups doing volunteer work and cleaning things up themselves but it's not up to these people to do this job. It's up to the government. If I were the owner of the house and it became a disgusting filth, I'd be embarrassed.

To begin with, we already have the problem of too many tourists here. We don't need or want more.

I live in Maui and I don't see what you are describing, aside from abandoned vehicles and I wish the county would tow them away more quickly. That said, it wouldn't hurt to spruce up the islands a bit. The same could be said for Texas and most other places!

On which island did you see "piles of trash everywhere"?

That would be great but there's lots of bills to pay. Teachers, social services, etc. We don't want/need more tourists. But I too don't see all these piles of trash you speak of, even on Oahu.

I agree that I don't see this mass of trash you're talking about, certainly not in tourist areas. I was just on Oahu in September for reference point and I can't point to when I saw such when I lived in Honolulu from 2016-2019.

That said, apart from the fact that Hawaii needs to spend money on more pressing needs (for the sake of argument), this trash clearly isn't stopping tourists from coming. It would seem disproportionate and unreasonable to spend a significant sum of tourism revenues on cleaning up.

Tourists money is far from free. It costs plenty to house, feed, serve and entertain them.

The problem is the same in San Francisco and other previously nice places run by the leftists. The woke local bosses are too busy instituting socialism in their fiefdoms and are not interested in making city employees work. Plus, they don't want to offend their base -- the other leftists preoccupied with the homeless, equity, etc. The people in charge were probably elected based on their "progressive" views, which by definition means that they have a warped view of reality and cannot manage a roll of toilet paper.

Who said they don't see piles of trash in Hawaii. I can clearly see a pile of kukae right above my post.

Huh. That's a strong statement, and you do not even specify what island you saw this on.

Wear and tear on roads, parks, beaches. Not sure how he sees it as "free" money.

Whatever problems Hawaii has I’m sure it’s a little bit more complicated than labeling everything as the work of leftists, progressives, socialists and woke people.
