There was no mention in the article about what's driving young, educated people out of the state.
I've had a lot of interns work for me - 100% intended to go to the mainland to work after graduation. None cited high costs in Hawaii (lets face it if you are in tech and move to the Bay Area - Hawaii seems cheap) - all bring up the lack of career opportunities/options in Hawaii. Some at least intend to have a career in the mainland and eventually return - and I'm sure some actually will - others weren't so sure.
Agree with above. Also local kids sometimes just find the mainland a more exciting place to live or it fits their interests/personality more.
I notice the opposite with Maui kids. Many high school graduates go off to the mainland for college. One semester later they are back and HATED the faster pace on the mainland. The ones who go to Oregon or Arizona seem to fit in better than the ones who go to California.
I knew some Oahu kids like that too. I remember talking to a teacher from Lanai HS years ago about how even their kids going to Maui is a big step. I guess it's all relative.

Trying to say this nicely - but I've not found the youngsters or people in general aspirational on the outer islands - they really don't count. Not really different than rural areas on the mainland - the best and brightest don't tend to come from those area.

It’s a bit amusing to me, at least, the way so many characterize “aspirational” to mean the pursuit of avariciously capitalistic careers and material lifestyles. Those that do are the lionized ‘movers and shakers’ of the world. Those who just don’t feel and want that rhythm are lazy ne’er-do-wells, eh? Lol.
Who wants to live in a state where the government mandates that you put an experimental vaccine into your body, or it will prevent you from doing the normal everyday functions of life? How is that much better than slavery? Yeah, they don't force you to work, but being forced to put something in your body that may well kill you is not really my idea of freedom.
Well huh … guess that means we won’t be expecting you … dang … was so looking forward
Once again the political nut cases are filtering through the state forums. Experimental vaccines, tracking devices. Is their some safe place to post without an invasion of the whackos?
