The opportunity for Hawaii is keeping the residents in Hawaii and keeping that money here - not from visitors.
A more realistic proposal would be 1) A casino resort on the Big Island 2) Reasonable taxes that incented a big name Vegas operator to manage the casino 3) Benefitted Native Hawaiians - as in move the money the State contributes to Native Hawaiians and fund it with Casino Revenue 4) Allow the national lotteries in Hawaii with tax revenue going to DOE 5) Allow online poker
If I want to gamble it is cheaper and way more fun to go to Vegas. If Big Island people on the dole want jobs they are just a $150 flight away. A casino would draw construction workers from Oahu and the mainland further increasing demand for housing. Then the demand for prostitution, drugs etc. will increase and I can supplement my dole with increased sales. Bring in the gamblers and I have a bigger group of marks.
I think it called the law of unintended consequences. I don't see it solving any current problems.
Then the demand for prostitution, drugs etc. will increase
Both readily available today.
Anyway - the odds of me going to a Waikiki Casino (and having to get a hotel room, membership, and pay $20 to enter are nonexistent - the odds of me going to a BI Vegas style Casino are low unless part of MGM Rewards/Caesars Rewards - the odds of me playing online poker, essentially 100% unless the State messed it up - and I'd certainly play Powerball when the numbers got high.
Of course but my statement was that it would increase. I think a casino on the Big Island is about the worst idea ever based on what I said. It would be better to put slots on the rail!
In the end the Legislature will vote it down again, using the Arguments of the past.
Agreed - will never happen - although they should be open to a lottery and online poker (a game of skill) but they won't on that either.
The only way to have a chance is if a strong and vocal group of Native Hawaiians advocated - but when I look at the dysfunction with DHHL, that won't happen either.
