The military? How is the Federal military on Oahu providing money to outer islands?

Medicaid is 64% Federal money and 36% State money. We all pay taxes for that.

All of Hawaii, including Oahu, would be 3rd world without Federal support. We would look like Tonga otherwise.

Every Federal Agency is located in the state capital on Oahu. Just because Federal money is distributed from there does not mean Oahu is providing the support. It is Federal support just like Oahu receives.
Defensive huh? Although that is typical of the outer islands - a bit of a chip on their shoulders. If you believe the outer islands sustain themselves to the degree Oahu does - you go on thinking that. Although - we'd rather you just say Thank You.

I don’t think that is what the poster was claiming. At all. He pointed out that most of what you claimed as Oahu supporting the outer islands is federal support … and that ALL of Hawaii, including Oahu, relies on federal support.

At least on the mainland - in rural South you've got car factories - the Dakota's call centers - etc.

Kauai - a missile launchpad. That is really about it - and even that misses a lot. They can't even get that right.
Heh. Do YOU have a source the majority of Oahu residents don’t care about the outer islands?

Perhaps the incessantly referenced concepts of ‘Aloha’, ‘Ohana’, ‘[Aloha] Aina’, and a basket of other similar words and phrases referring to unity of respect for all things Hawaiian - um, are just marketing phooey.

Or maybe you live in highly business-oriented transactional culture and don’t rub shoulders much with the everyday folk?

Grandiose delusions!!! (And stealing Jack Nicholson's line from "A Few Good Men".)

Who should we thank? You personally? The residents of Oahu? Or the Federal Government who actually provides the money?

BTW, I'm pretty sure you should be thanking them too. If the Federal Government suddenly withdrew all support for Hawaii, Oahu would suffer the most.

Once again, exactly what does Oahu provide that props up the outer islands?

Yes, me.

Do you think all that tax revenue the State of Hawaii receives from Oahu - just stays on Oahu? Do you actually think it is allocated proportionally?

And anyway - this fed assistance argument is really kinda silly - all 50 states take Fed money - Hawaii ranks 33rd in Fed money dependency.

And the Fed's fund roughly 15% of the State budget - among the lowest in the US

What does Maui produce - sugar cane? You can't even do that.

Oh - and you are welcome for all the Medicaid money.

Outer islands have short man defensiveness. Just saying - but in the end - still short.
2018 tourist spending Oahu $8.16 billion dollars. Oahu population: 953,207.
2018 tourist spending Maui $5.07 billion dollars. Maui population: 144,444.

Maui generates substantially more tourist revenue per resident than Oahu.

Then, there's this:

QUOTE: Apr 29, 2021 — Visitor arrivals and expenditures varied widely by island. ... visitors spent more on Maui at $330 million, compared to Oahu's $260 million.

https://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/...ort-march.html

Perhaps Oahu residents should be thanking the outer islands instead of insulting them.

All 50 states take money, yes. But some take less back than they pay out to the feds … California, for example. Hawaii doesn’t. It is a net drain on the fed.

Per capita, seems Maui is pulling more than its weight, eh?

Oh boy. April 2021. Sept 2021 maybe?

As measured by the average daily census, there were 61,448 visitors on Oahu in September 2021, compared to 10,604 visitors in September 2020, versus 101,093 visitors in September 2019.

Through the first nine months of 2021, there were 2,389,565 visitors to Oahu compared to 1,280,554 visitors (+86.6%) in the first nine months of 2020, versus 4,657,880 visitors (-48.7%) in the first nine months of 2019. For the first nine months of 2021, total visitor spending of $3.95 billion was a 35.4 percent drop from $6.11 billion in the first nine months of 2019.

Maui: There were 172,770 visitors to Maui in September 2021, compared to 2,479 visitors in September 2020, versus 210,108 visitors in September 2019. Visitor spending was $315.8 million, down 7.0 percent from the $339.7 million spent in September 2019.

ANYWAY. THATS ALL YOU GOT - tourists. You don’t produce anything else.
