He probably was sterotyped and they probably were paying no attention to the color of his skin while sterotyping him as well. Everyone is sterotyped as soon as they are seen or heard and with lifeguards it is almost a job requirement that they assess the perceived risks of folks before they get in the water or they would be exhausted by the end of the day from hauling inappropriate folks out of inappropriate places.

Hmm, a surfer experience card might be a good idea. Show a lifeguard you know how to survive in the ocean and get a card so you can just flash it and reassure the lifeguards that you are competent.

Key West is an awful lot like Waikiki used to be except with chickens added. They even have Hawaii trinkets!

dude it does not matter if your white or not... i am white and i bodyboard all over the island... the reason why is bcuz of the shore pounding waves... and the undertoe is mean if you have no clue what you are doing then you should know that common sense is going to tell you to stay out of the water... just bcuz your boardshorts are secure and you get one board doesnt mean you are mike stewart or jeff hubbard.... all the people you did see out there have grown up around these kinds of waves and know what they are doing... and trust me my friend even locals know their limits when it scares us it should terrify you... so they were not stereotyping you they were looking after you and all the other white tourists dont take offense to dude...

Very true. Most of the haoles I know here, including myself, come in colors like bark or old-shoe-brown.
