I'll just warn you, though, $1,200 for a 2 bedroom will be hard to find, a nice 2-bedroom. A small studio were I live, near Ala Moana Center, is $920, a one bedroom would be $1,200-1,500, but if you're thinking about another island, or the Leeward side of Oahu, you pay less, get more space. The problem is, w/o a car, traveling on bus from Leeward side to Honolulu can be a long commute. You might look into Salt Lake on Oahu. Some people think it isn't the best area, but my very haole (white) looking former friend had a nice/spacious place there for a while and she liked it there. I tend to think that people who think certain areas are "bad" are often being racist whether they realize it or not. I'm white and I've lived in a lot of very local areas, with working class types or even some beach boy types. The only place I can think of I'd never live is Chinatown. I even lived in Kalihi for 1 1/2 yrs, considered high in meth usage and some gang activity, but I didn't have a car, used bus and never had any problems. It was green and beautiful, and had the prettiest Buddhist temple just up the road from me.
starbugster, I was reading old threads too and came across this one. my hat is off to you! I agree with every word you said. we live on the Leeward side and absolutely love it, never had a problem or really seen any problems. Trips to town can be a nightmare though, lucky dont have to go that often.
