I have been working in International Education for three years in Japan and have just landed a TESOL instructor position with a language school operating at a top 25 public university on the mainland. This language school operates in Oahu as well. I intend on having my TESOL certificate completed by the spring of 2010 and relocate to HI once I have a year with my current employer.

Can anyone tell me what the job scene is like for international education, TESOL, student exchange programs, etc. Is the pay completive for this kind of work in Hawaii? Any upcoming seminars or conferences recommended for networking?

All the public schools in the state are run by the Dept. of Education. Their website should have the most valid information available.

Things aren't so good for teachers in this economy right now, though. There were quite a few of them laid off or just not hired back at the beginning of this school year because of budget cuts. Of the ones who were hired, they are getting unpaid furlough days, I think seventeen or eighteen of them, to help make up budget shortfalls. At least they have jobs, though.
