In your search for a home on the BI keep in mind the elevation of each location. Some people want to be more up country and cooler and others want the warmer coastal areas. Just something to think about; ask questions if in doubt.

Slightly off-topic, but might help someone searching the forums... the easiest way to tell if a Big Island Craigslist posting is a scam:

1. The location simply says Big Island
2. The rent is $500 for anything near Allii drive, and the place isn't a dump
3. Dogs and cats are both allowed (not 100% true, but often)
4. Number one rule: if it seems to good to be true, it is

Also, if you do respond and get a personalized email back, watch for these indicators: the owner is a missionary in Nigeria, or they need to check your credit report by having you click on a link.

The best way I've found is to cross-check ads against those on West Hawaii Today's classifieds section, and you have to be vigilant with calling and emailing polite inquiries. Google the phone numbers listed in the ads, and see if they link to a realtor website. Hope this helps!

Landlords that actually PAY for their ad are much less likely to be a scammer.

Unless you are at 3000+ feet in elevation, you certainly won't need any heat.
Electric is another story. Figure on 3+ times your mainland cost.

Rental prices are becoming more and more negotiable due to the economy. Don't be afraid to do so.

Also it has been suggested to call up those who rent out weekly/monthly vacation rentals on vrbo.com to make an offer for a long-term lease. Hope you find what you are looking for!
