Threads sure can digress...especially when it comes to pets.
LOL - very true! Pets have a way of hijacking our attention in general. Like, "very serious business matter, really important stu...PUPPY!!!!!!"

Married and wanting to have kids I need about $5000 a month take home to live comfortably on Oahu. $2200 for rent + $600 for food + $300 for transportation + $300 phone, internet, and utilities + $600 for private school tuition + $500 miscelaneous (birthday gifts, nice dinner, repairs, clothes, household supplies etc...) and $500 for savings.

When I was single and had no ambition it was a lot less, but Im not at that point of my life anymore.

If we wanted to make more it would be easy, we just prefer the time off for fun rather than the additional money different jobs would bring, when we are more than content this way.
Not meaning to pry, but I was just wondering what you do for a living and what you can do in this economy to make more money EASILY.

Many people could work more in their current job to make more money. My husband and I could make twice the money we do, but have arranged to work part-time instead, to have more free time. Or those unlucky enough to work full-time, could do overtime. It's nice working part-time though, because if you want extra $$$ (say for a month-long trip to SE Asia) you can work full-time for a month, and then take off for a month.

There aren't as many fish as there used to be so you may end up hungry occasionally. Also on days when there isn't much sunshine you'll want to either run a generator ($$ for gas) or have the option to use Helco to top off your battery bank. Which is a minimum of $25 a month for Helco to keep a meter at your place. With a condo, there are usually condo fees to be paid and there's always property tax each year. Plus the stuff you can't grow or forage such as bread, most medicines, clothing, shoes, cell phones, internet connections, etc. There are also occasional things such as dental work or surgery which generally isn't a do-it-yourself sort of thing.

One thousand a month is about as cheap as you'll find by the time you calculate all the miscellaneous expenses and that will probably only work if you have a living situation which is free. This is also how much you need to be comfortable, not just how much you need to survive.
