the restaurant i work for is opening up at the beachcomber in waikiki later this year and ive been thinking about transfering...what is the minimum wage for servers there? is it $3 like other parts of the country? also, whats the most affordable area to live to not have to commute over 30 mins just to waitress?(waikiki looks way too expensive) i live in las vegas now and understand the cost of living will be quite different but could i expect to make $30k-$40k as a server? i bartend also but assume those would be better jobs that the locals would get first dibs at but maybe im wrong? any info from people in the tourism/food industry would be appreciated...
You should be fine working in Waikiki at the Beachcomber (prime location)...my bro is a waiter (not in Waikiki) and does fine, although he does rent a studio we own in kapolei and lives pretty cheap. You may want to consider Aeia or pearl city to live and not have a nightmare commute. Good luck!
Yes, but only if you have paying customers. Do you visit Hawaiian news websites online? Do you realize how bad the economy is here?
If you move here, and your manager doesn't like you... he/she doesn't have to fire you. To get rid of you, all s/he has to do is give you only one shift a week. And your manager will have a stack of 200 applications, people who already live near Waikiki, who are looking for work. The manager can easily find another person to take your other shifts.
And when I say 200 people looking for a job as a server / waiter / waitress, I'm not kidding. Best of luck to you!
best of luck to someone who posted 2 years ago and probably never moved to hawaii...
