Hey everyone I'm Florin, I'm re locating to the Big Island. I'm a carpenter with tons of custom home building experience. I have several questions one, is there still a high demand for carpenters on the Big Island and on what side of the Island also whats the vibe like out there? I lived on Maui and Oahu before. Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately your son in law couldn't have picked a worse time to move over here and be in the construction trade. It's really starting to tank over here, and the last carpenters, masons, electricians etc. to arrive are normally the first to leave. I've seen it happen here on Maui in the early eighties, mid nineties, and now it's happening again. Those that have been here the longest will have the best chance at getting by. His best bet would be to move to a more "Touristy" destinantion, like Kona or Waikaloa, and get a job either in a resort, or as a condo manager or assistant manager. Pay may not be all that great, but the job normally comes with a condo on site. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm speaking from years of experience.
Another possibility, I've had this happen a few times, would be to show up on a jobsite, before anyone else, with tools, and offer a "free" days work. Just tell the foreman you'll work the day for nothing, if the foreman is happy with your work, he'll give you a job, or, if he's a half decent kind of guy, will at least recommend you to others. It worked on me!!!!

Aloha and best of luck
