Hi, I'm 22 years old and planned on taking off of school for this summer and living in Hawaii. I was hoping to get information on where in Hawaii is better to live than other parts. (I am from New Orleans and we definitely have spots that tourists would want to avoid. And areas that you would prefer to live in depending on if you're older or younger.) I have no children or pets and would not be taking my car. So what is the best spot to live in? How difficult would it be to find rent for 3 months of summer? and transportation without a car? Any job you would reccomend for my situation? andd the fun stuff!..While i'm over there(which hopefully I get positive advice and make it) what would you reccomend experiencing and taking part in? Also what are the people like over there? I heard it's layed back which is perfect for me, it's how we are in New Orleans. I also came across, what I hope to be a naively made video on youtube, that white people are not very welcomed on the islands. The feedback on it was just the oppsite though.

Hope to hear back.
Thanks everyone.

without a car I would go to oahu and stay around the waikiki area. lots of buses. your best bet I think may be an extended vacation rental. not many jobs for temp, in fact not many jobs period. as for what to see and do just get out and explore both land and sea, you will have a great time

Almost anywhere on Oahu would work since it is served very well by The Bus. Take enough money that you won't need to find a job since you aren't likely to if you are new to the island and will only be staying three months. You could look in the University area for a summer rental since there are lots of apartments that the university students vacate right around that time and then they want to re-rent the apartments at the end of summer to the university students again.

A more rural option would be to look into WWOOFing which is Willing Workers On Organic Farms. If you google that, you should find some links. That would work for the islands other than Oahu. Usually you get somewhere to live, although some of them can be quite rudimentary, and at least one meal a day in exchange for several hours of work on their farm. Each one is different, check around and see if any of them would be something you'd be interested in. Some folks have had good experiences with WWOOFing and others have had horrible experiences, so check into it carefully.
