I would say that the reactions and opinions and viewpoints of the people on this forum are not necessarily going to reflect the US general population, if only because we are all online to participate. That is, someone who DOESN'T have access doesn't have a way to state their view.

Home Broadband Adoption 2009 | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project
This source says that in 2009 about 63% of American adults have broadband access at home. I don't think there are that many dialing up these days, but even if we put that up to 70%, that's still nearly a third of our nation who don't have access at home. That leaves public access terminals, like the library.

We are all blessed, who can have all the resources mentioned. Not everyone has them, nor is everyone aware of how to use one. My neighbors, in their 40s, have no idea how to use the internet, because they never had to. My neighbor's mother, in her 60s, same thing. Could they learn? Sure, probably well enough if they HAD to, but it wouldn't be easy, and who's going to show them? Those who have children or relatives can learn from them, and maybe someone helpful at the library can lend a hand.

Again, just saying... you always have to consider the audience you are trying to reach with a program, and it seems like the financially destitute aren't the most likely to have computer and internet access.

I can certainly see using a newly integrated system, and having online features for those who can access them. Maybe fewer employees, and smaller satellite offices with kiosks that give access to the new system. That way there would still be some employees to answer questions and lend a hand to anyone who didn't know how to use the online system.

Similar to having the airline check-in kiosks...

RELAX... People are not going to be going without SNAP (food stamps) in Hawaii because of this.
Already, churches, hospitals and other non-profits help people fill out the forms and they will continue to do so. People will also soon be allowed to file via phone, which they cannot do now. They also promise that the current delays in getting approved will be reduced.

I live in the Puna District, Big Island. It contains a large number of very poor people, many homeless, etc. I take the boys to the library 1-2 times per week and you would not believe how many people sit at the computers accessing government program information. I am not trying to snoop on them, but it is generally pretty obvious when you can see the state and federal logos on the pages! No worries about access and being left out. The people are quite aware of how to get what they need.

We'll agree to disagree, as others will be bored if we continue.

I'm not saying it's right, just that that's the way it is. It's the definition of progress.
