Hi there,

I am planning to relocate to Oahu January, 2011. Currently, I am leasing new car and will still have it at the time I will make a move. I know that in order to move a leased car anywhere outside the state I live, I must get a release for leasing company to do so. Does anyone have any experience in this matter? Do leasing companies charge any additional fees? Do they actually allow you to move without any hassle? Besides that, do most people drive used cars in the islands? Does driving a new car more likely draw more attention for petty thieves? Since many places for rent do not even offer assigned parking, is it safe to leave a car parked anywhere?

Thank you in advance!

Nobody cares what kind of car you drive so most folks drive used ones. Thieves prefer new cars, not to mention the usual scrapes and scratches of living closely.

The leasing company may have concerns about shipping a car they own across the Pacific. If a lot of companies won't even mail stuff already paid for to us, it just doesn't seem like a car leasing company is going to be real happy about someone shipping a car they own far away. Not that I know much about car leasing, we just pay cash for a beater and drive it until something more interesting comes along.

Call your lease company now. My wife's car was leased and we had to either turn in the vehicle of buy it outright. One of the biggest hassles we had relocating here.

It depends a lot of which company you are leasing from. If you are leasing from one of the major car companies, it is probably no issue. If it is a third party leasing company, it may be an issue. In any event, contact them right away.
