Aloha,
I'm curious about what life is like in Hawaii Kai, and if I had to move there to be closer to job/family if I would like it. I currently live in the Kailua area 4 houses from the beach. It's great except when I have to commute. We like walking our dogs on the beach, stand up paddling and riding our bikes. Don't know if we could improve on the living situation if we were to move. Mahalo.

Given a choice between Kailua on Oahu and Hawaii Kai, I'd choose Kailua. It's not that far between Kailua and Hawaii Kai that you couldn't visit family frequently. If you are happy in Kailua, seems to me moving may not be worthwhile.

They also mentioned a job in Hawaii Kai. If you're commuting every day, then I'd say its worth it. Even if your house isn't as nice or as close to the beach, you get the extra time back from your commute.

True, but commuting from Kailua to Hawaii Kai can be done around the Sandy Beach corner instead of over the Pali so the traffic wouldn't be too bad and the scenery would be wonderful.

They are both very haole neighborhoods, Kailua has a bit more hometown feel than Hawaii Kai. Hawaii Kai almost feels like a bedroom attached to Honolulu, although it does have it's own shopping center. The beaches in Kailua are much better than the ones in Hawaii Kai and I think Kailua doesn't get quite as hot as Hawaii Kai.

I'd think it has a lot to do with the individual person making the decision. If beaches are important, then choose Kailua. If family and no commute to work are important, then choose Hawaii Kai and commute to the beach in Kailua.

Thanks guys, you're both right
Right now the person making more money between us works at home and prefers Kailua and the beach, so that's going to keep us here for now. I enjoy (ok, well I don't mind too much) driving the coastal route to Hawaii Kai, as long as I allow enough time to get stuck behind sightseers or construction delays or the "super laid back let everyone in from the side streets" crawl through Waimanalo (and as long as gas prices don't get much higher). I saw the sticky post about city by city and that helped too. There are lots of pros to both areas. I don't think we could lose either way. Thanks for your input!

SO jealous as someone who used to live there are would love to move back.

I think Kailua is cooler especially if you guys ever want to zoom to Honolulu for night life or yummy food. There's nothing like the aromas of the Pali Highway especially during/after rain. I have never smelled anything like that in the entirety of the continental united states! My sweetie worked in Hawaii Kai and I always felt it was kind of plain short of body-surfing at Sandy beach and Kona Brewery. Yummy pizza!

Aloha!
