Imagine being told that your doctor accepts your health insurance, only to discover you have been stuck with a hefty medical bill at the visit’s end.

That’s exactly what happened to numerous patients of podiatrist John Lanham in Milwaukee, Wis. As a result, Lanham has been the subject of more complaints to state regulators within the past five years than any other foot doctor in the state, the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported.

Happened to me three years ago with oral surgeon on extraction and bone graft who gave me an estimate from my insurance company which was totally bogus. I ended up paying $1,900 on a $2,200 bill, when I had been told my cost would be $700. Never could get a straight answer on how their 'estimate' was so wrong. Turns out later I learn most dental plans won't pay for anything relating to implants. I had exceptional insurance through my employer at the time, not the standard 'won't pay more than $1k/yr plan' most people have.

Should have filed a complaint. Now, that I'm reading this, maybe I will.

That is why you should check with your insurance even if he is listed as a provider. It will be he said she said otherwise. You sign to be responsible if insurance doesn't pay.
