My wife went in the hospital for an emergency a week ago. Right before the end of the year. Now three days in to the new year, she is still there, but expects to be released tomorrow. When thinking about the hospital bill, we know it will be big. She has a high-deductible plan with a $6800 deductible for 2022. In 2023, the deductible becomes $7000. Anyway, with a hospital stay that started in December and continues into JanUary, how do they bill? Is it split with expenses incurred in 2022 and in 2023 being separated so that we have two deductibles, or is it bill as a 2022 or 2023 bill. covering the whole thing? Will we in effect have a $13800 deductible instead of $6800 or $7000?

Her release date does not dictate to which year the charges are allocated. Insurance company will pay benefits based upon the year charges were incurred. Charges incurred in 2022 will be applied toward 2022 deductible. Charges incurred in 2023 will be applied to 2023 deductible. So, yes, you will have two deductibles.

AFAIK this hospital stay will be 2022. She needs to be out 90 days. Ask the doctor. Treatments in Jan-March could be on followup plan.

This person is NOT on Medicare. 90-days' hospitalization per benefit period is not relevant.

It’s possible your wife’s health insurance plan has a rollover/carryover provision whereby deductible incurred the last quarter of the year applies for the following year. Check it out!

Got the EOB. We do have 2022 charges with a separate deductible from the 2023 charges. It worked out okay though, so far, the amount of unused 2022 deductible exceeds the amount of charges, so it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.
