Help! My doctor just gave me a death sentence: No caffeine! It's my only drug, and I really try to be moderate. I'm really not out of control. I know I can wean off and drink decaf, but when it's my reason for wanting to wake up, how do I get over the psychological let down of not getting my morning "buzz"? Maybe I just need to know I'm not alone. Thanks!
BTW, the doctor said a person can drink coffee for years without adverse affects, then all of a sudden hit a wall and not be able to tolerate caffeine. BTW: I own a coffee shop!

Why not take this on as a challange and find your creative side?... you could maybe boost business with what you come up with by creating other hot drinks that are caffeine free but satisfy the taste buds. I decaffed myself years ago by gradually cutting back on the regular coffee more and more and replacing it with decaff. I stayed off of it for many, many years but eventually started on it again when the reason I decaffed myself cleared up.
GOOD LUCK!

Look at Starbucks' offerings. They do quite well here, despite a big part of the population not touching caffeine. Various lemonades, hot chocolate, frappacinos, etc.

Are you allowed to have decaf for good, or only just for weening off? If you can't have decaf for good, you can still make a lot of milk-based drinks in the vein of Starbucks creme frappucinos. In terms of adjusting, if you've got someone you live with, maybe you can ask them to make you coffee and not tell you it's decaf.

When I go for coffee today I can ask my coffee-shop-owner friend for more ideas if you like. She has a lot of non-coffee options too.

nimchimpsky, Your post made me laugh. I guess I'm not the only one to play mind games with myself, by telling someone to make coffee and not tell me it's decaf. :-D Today I added "just a little" regular coffee to mine, just to know I could still have a little "fun." Thanks for offering to ask your friend. We already have tons of decaf and/or non-coffee drinks. I always felt sympathy for those who couldn't partake in the real thing. I know they taste good, but I drink my coffee black and for the caffeine buzz. :-(

You get use to not having caffeine. The hardest part is getting over the psychological dependency.

It won't be easy, because caffeine is in a lot of products besides coffee. If you suffer from withdrawal headaches, note that many pain medications contain caffeine.

I know what you mean. I always felt bad for Mormons and other people who can't drink coffee for whatever reason. Coffee is a godsend.

Here's an idea. Coffee flavored stuff, but not actually made out of coffee?

I've learned since the original posting that decaf has caffeine. I also learned through "Max's Mama" on an old post (2007) about an herbal "coffee" product called Teeccino. Their website is AMAZING and informative. Check it out! I ordered some.

Teeccino is good. I gave up caffeinated coffee about 2 years ago. I occasionally drink decaf and eat things with caffeine like chocolate. I was really tired for a few weeks as I went through withdrawal but once I got through that I felt better then ever. I LOVE coffee. Giving it up was hard but I am happy that I did it.
