Thanks.
The better question is... why are you taking Vicodin (and so much of it) in the first place? It's just wisdom teeth, man up, take an ibuprofin and call it a day.

Had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago, just Novocaine to numb me up a bit for the actual surgery, no gas. Two were impacted, one was rotten (it hadn't completely pushed through the gum, so food accumulated under the flap) and had to be taken out in pieces, 2 stitches if I remember correctly. Packed with gauze to change every couple hours, swish with salt water and Advil to keep down any swelling. The next day I was eating regular solid food (club sandwich) over at Friendly's.

Sorry, I have no wish to be a martyr.

When they took my wisdom teeth out, they were impacted. They gave me novacaine, some type of injection and gas. I remember all of the blood and the little buzz saw they used to get them out..........but I didn't feel a thing.

They also gave me pain meds............and I took them all and was glad I had them.

My motto is: "Why suffer if I don't have to?"

BTW..........they took all four of them out at once........and I am glad they did.

Over and done.........all at once. Did not need a repeat performance.

The pain was pretty terrible, and my doctor recommended it. I also had a dry socket that developed and was excruciating. Thank God I recovered from that depression spell. It was definitely vicodin provoked.

I'm going in for lots of oral surgery on Friday... read this thread this morning and then went in to pre-pay the dentist (for the 5% discount). He wasn't planning to prescribe anything for pain after my surgery. I mentioned that I'd feel better if I had a couple Tylenol with Codeine or something in case the first day is real bad (I've taken Codeine before with no issues). He prescribed 12 Vicodin. Might as well flush them because I'm afraid to take them now! I've been pretty upset with my dental phobia all week, I don't need anything to make my mood worse.

If you flush them before you have your surgery, then end up with horrible pain...........I seriously doubt the Dr. will give you more.

Save them, you might need them...........and remember this..........thousands upon thousands of people take them every day with no bad side effects.

And even if you do have a side effect, few of them are worse than the pain you may have.

They call them rebound headaches. My question is: why take something as strong as Vicodin for dental work? To me that seems like overkill. I know it's painful,i've had it done. Wouldn't Tylenol kill the pain without all of the side effects?

Personally, I think doctors overdo the painkillers. I went to the ER recently with a kidney stone. Their drug of choice? Dilaudid. That at one time was used for end stage cancer patients due to the strength. When I refused it and asked for Ibuprofen they looked at me like I was nuts.

When my daughter had her tonsils removed they gave her Morphine of all things! In my day we got ice cream.

I'm just saying.........

It's called progress...........in this day and age people shouldn't have to suffer needlessly.

I didn't say that anyone should have to suffer. What I said was IN MY OPINION doctors tend to offer patients medications like Vicodin when something non narcotic would work just as well.

Progress isn't always a good thing!
