I was wondering if anyone has had this surgery and how long did it take for the initial pain to subside? My Mom had surgery yesterday and is in such horrible pain they have her on demerol. I know she is just barely 24 hours post surgery, but I have never seen my Mom in this much pain and she has had numerous surgeries. Is this normal? When can she expect the pain to ease off some? They are wanting her to get up and walk but the pain is so bad she can't.

My MIL woke up screaming in recovery after her complete knee replacement. Bone is cut off during this surgery. That has to hurt. The meds should be working for her pain. If not, talk to the doctor. As I remember, it took a day or so to get the pain under control. Don't be afraid to ask for more or change the medication to one that works for her. And be sure she does her exercises when they start them, very important. And yes, they hurt too.

It's been almost a year now since my MIL had her surgery. She needs to have the other knee done, but she's in her mid-80's and doesn't want to do it. The anesthesia took about 3 months to work its way out of her system. She had some confusion, brain fog type of issues. We thought she may have had a stroke, but she came out of it finally. So watch for that too.

By the way, she was glad she had the procedure done. She was in so much pain daily. But not now.

Thanks for the input, I am 2000 miles away and it really hurt me to hear the pain in her voice, but she sounded better this morning.

I had knee replacement 3 years ago and my knee is still not as strong as it was prior to surgery.
I have learned recently that anesthesia can have bad effects on an older person, so the degree of pain may be "imagined". I had some delirium following surgery and thought the nursing staff was out to get me to the point that I would not go to sleep at night. I certainly do not regret having the surgery and am grateful for the new knee despite the fact that I lost about two years of my life in recovery.

I thought it was just me. I had total knee replacement August 11 and was convinced the nursing staff was out to get me. They stuck me in a private room and let me there pretty much unattended. Twelve hours later, I started to come out of it but I still feel quite traumatized. What a terrible experience. I think it may have been a reaction to the medication.

Anyway, this is one of the worst surgeries to have. My pain was uncontrolled for weeks beecause ever pain med I took caused a panic attack. I finallty starting taking Tramdol which took away the pain without making me crazy.

This is not a surgery to take lightly. There are months of therapy to endure and pain is to be expected. I am finally starting to feel better after 10 weeks and pretty much have range of motion back.

Demerol is a drug that can cause cognitive problems, ie) confusion and hallucinations. I've heard it may be taken off the market at some point? But it's been around for a long time. Even Morphine, the gold standard, can cause delirium in some.

Are you able to get in and out of a bathtub? I'm about to have the surgery and am worried about that.

My elderly mother also the surgery and had the same issues as the other people, thinking people were out to get her and also brain fog for about a year afterward. I wonder what it is about this specific surgery that causes this, does anyone know?

Ask her Dr. if it's normal or not. What does her actual Dr. say?

I had my knees done in 03 & 04 and the pain was made tolerable by the "moblity" machine they put me on to slowly move my leg at the knee joint. That and ice were the ticket to a fairly pain free experience for me.

The "moblity" machine moved my leg for at least 6 hours (spread out) a day until I could bend my knee 90 deg as normal. This kept the ligaments and tendons from shrinking ,or to much swelling, which is where all the pain is.

Add ice and I was up and walking in a single day!!
