I saw a report on the news or 60mins, can't remember which one, and this doctor cracked the knuckles on just one hand, for 50 years, result: no difference whatsoever, he did x-rays and everything to look for any sign of arthritis or other damage.
it's a complete and utter wives tale. Crack away.
I've done it since I was 5 years old. I can't help it, in fact I HAVE to do it. It hasn't changed a thing on my hands.
The ligament injuries are the result of someone trying to pop their knuckle, being unable to, and not stopping - and pushing HARDER - thus damaging a ligament.
Kinda like - if you try to do a split and you're just not limber enough, but instead of stopping you push yourself down and rip your groin muscle. That's not wear and tear. It's lack of self-control, lack of common sense, and general stupidity.
If it won't go further, don't force it.
Popping your knuckles isn't actually popping your knuckles. It's releasing the gas that forms between the knuckles. And you can do it once every 20 minutes or so.
I've cracked my knuckles my entire "adult" life....no Arthritis(IF anything cracking knuckles helps prevent Arthritis) and no hand enlargement either; just hairy palms.......like Mom warned......ROFL. The noise is caused by gas pockets in your finger joint fluids as they burst.....our best, current information.
